Carlyle Group Sewer Sludge Business
Threatens South Bronx Environment
Mayor Bloomberg Refuses to Help South Bronx Residents in Toxic Environment, So Residents Hold Earth-Day Candlelight Vigil and Call for Synagro-Owner Carlyle to Enforce Higher Standards
South Bronx residents sick from years of breathing nauseating smell of sewage held an Earth-Day candlelight vigil in front of the New York Organic Fertilizer Company (NYOFCO), a subsidiary of Synagro Technologies, a company that processes sewage, owned by Washington, DC-based Carlyle, a giant global buyout firm.
A member of Mothers on the Move (MOM) in a business suit and face-mask of David Rubenstein, CEO of Carlyle Group held another member on a dog leash dressed in a business suit and with face-mask of Mayor Bloomberg. MOM members in hazmat suits, with mock asthma pumps, face masks, candles, placards and a mock skunk highlighted concerns about the nauseating odors emanating from the New York Organic Fertilizer Company (NYOFCO) and called for David Rubenstein to enforce higher standards, after New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) refused to help.
In addition to odors, MOM members highlighted their opposition to DEP’s expansion of the Hunts Point Water Pollution Control Plant by building 130 feet high waste processors right next to Barretto Point Park. Instead, they propose that they be constructed within the property site of the current waste facility.

Serrano: NYOFCO Stench Must End
Washington, DC – March 25, 2008 –Today, Congressman José E. Serrano released the following statement on the need to end the noxious odors released by the New York Organic Fertilizer Company (NYOFCo) pelletizing plant in the Hunts Point neighborhood of the Bronx:
“For too many years the South Bronx has been the repository for the industries and activities that other parts of the City don’t want in their backyard. The noxious odors that come from the NYOFCo pelletizing plant are a daily reminder to residents of the South Bronx that our fight for environmental justice must continue.
“Mothers on the Move’s imaginative and moving approach to raising awareness of this injustice highlighted the unreasonable burden that the NYOFCo facility places on the residents in surrounding neighborhoods. I was moved to learn that one woman at the event spoke eloquently about being unable to even hang her laundry out to dry because of the fumes emitted by the plant. This event will bolster all of our efforts to end the terrible odors and air pollution that still plague our neighborhoods.
“In November, 2006, I called for the shutdown of NYOFCo since it was then operating without a permit from the State of New York. It continues to operate without this permit and daily fouls the air of our neighborhoods. I will redouble my efforts to work with city, state, and federal authorities to bring this plant into compliance. If it cannot comply with operating regulations, it must be shut down.”
