WE SAY NO TO THE Dept. of Ed's
REORGANIZATION!
At issue is the latest New York City Department of Education proposal to reorganize our schools, which was put out without consulting the public or accepting public input. That's three major reorganizations in five years, and the public has NEVER been consulted about ANY of these reorganizations, even though each reorganization is chaotic and destabilizing for parents and teachers and for our kids. This from a Chancellor who repeatedly claims to want to bring stability to the system.

MOTHERS ON THE MOVE makes a STATEMENT!
We, Mothers on the Move, demand full parent participation and complete access to transparent decision-making in education. The New York City Department of Educations' school REORGANIZATION grants principals unlimited authority over our childrens' futures and millions of our tax dollars. The thug mentality of higher-ups in this system insults the checks and balances upon which this country was built. We call for students, parents, and teachers to rise in solidarity against the restructuring of the education system. Enough is enough!

Our Youth SPEAK:
"Students should be involved in the decision making of these Empowerment Schools. The fact is that students are the majority in schools and we should be able to communicate with the staff on the things we want to improve in our school. We have the right to good education."
– Francis Rodriguez, Y.O.M. member, 15 years old, student at Violin and Dance at Morris High School Campus, Bronx.

Meeting with the Chancellor, Oh what an experience!
On Wednesday, February 21, 2007, the Department of Education & its Chancellor Klein hosted a Childrens First Education Reform Roundtable at Hostos Community College. This roundtable was scheduled in an attempt to "hear out" the Bronx community. MOM and YOM organized a rally in response to the apparent oversight of parental and youth engagement in the decision-making of this bold transformation.
Outside of the D Building, Savoy Manor of Hostos, the Police Department was sent to tell us that NO POSTERS we allowed at the meeting. Pictures of posters below.

The members definately felt that the message from the Department of Education was that their voice had NO VALUE. Our parents and children got alot louder in protest of this demand from the DOE. The DOE also sent one of their finest to question our rally, we responded with louder chants as our Executive Director addressed the Klein staff person.
Once we were able to enter the actual meeting site, Klein was asked a plethora of questions from the youth and parents of MOM along with a few other organizations in the borough. To almost all of the questions, he answered with the same phrase, "We will investigate it." By the end of the meeting, the audience was mockingly answering the questions for him, "We will investigate it."
As a follow-up, we have asked if the MOM parents and Youth on the Move have received any calls or e-mails from the DOE, but there has been no contact from the Department.
Regardless of the obvious lack of follow-through, we will continue to put pressure on the DOE until JUSTICE IS SERVED.
Below are pictures from the rally. ENJOY!
